Some people with tattoos may later choose to have one or all of them removed. Fortunately, there are safe and effective methods to successfully remove them.
The methods for removing tattoos are Laser Removal and Surgical Excision. We currently employ the UltraLight-Q Nd:Yag with frequency doubling capability and the Matrix Fractionated CO2 laser to treat your tattoos and other pigmented lesions. These lasers have been used for years in the removal of cosmetic and traumatic tattoos. Multiple treatment sessions are necessary, and should be spaced out about every 2 months.
Before your laser treatment, you will first be seen for an initial consultation. An evaluation of the lesion is carried out at the time to see if laser therapy is appropriate. Because the location, color, shape and size of each tattoo is unique, the removal procedure must be personalized to suit each person. We will discuss the procedure in detail as well as potential risks and complications, outcomes and alternative treatments.
During the treatment your tattoo will be anesthetized using lidocaine (similar to novacaine) with a very small needle. After laser treatment there is some immediate whitening of the tattoo and there may be some pinpoint bleeding or bruising may occur. The tattoo should be covered with antibiotic ointment and a dressing. Changing this dressing 1-2 times a day after cleaning with soap and water or dilute hydrogen peroxide is necessary. The laser treated area may be swollen for a few days and may ooze and crust for about 1 week. The tattoo may not look very different after this oozing resolves, but over the next 2 months the tattoo color will fade.
Side effects are usually minor but may include discoloration at the treatment site, infection, or some scarring. For tattoos that are difficult to remove, there may be residual pigment in the treatment area.
